Perches and land size, explained.

The unit every Sri Lankan land listing uses, in plain terms — and how to think about size when comparing plots.

What a perch is

A perch is the standard unit of land measurement in Sri Lanka, equal to 272.25 square feet (about 25.3 square meters). Land is priced and listed per perch far more often than per square foot, so it's worth getting comfortable with the unit before comparing plots.

A quick sense of scale

10 perches is roughly enough for a modest single house footprint with some garden space. 20 perches gives comfortable room for a house, garden, and parking. Beyond that, you're typically looking at larger family homes or land with room to subdivide or expand later.

Comparing plots by price per perch

When plots differ in size, comparing total price alone can be misleading. Dividing price by perches gives you a like-for-like rate to compare across locations and listings — our catalogue shows this directly on plots priced per perch.
